chain, they usually last about 100k but you can tell they are bad when you can hear a ticking noise, this is the chain slapping against the timing cover

the last one i did was on a 92 pickup, 22re engine has a timing chain. i am not sure about the maintenance, the book just mentiones somthing about measuring a set number of links to varify that it has not stretched. but in a second here i will go get a book and double check........ in a scheduled maintenance handbook, nothing is mentioned about maintenace for the chain. but iff you remove the head or the timing chain cover, that is the ideal time to check it out. wish i had more info for you but.....

Timing chain. with plastic guides now if you have been using toyota oil filthers your in better shape because non toyota oil filthers dont have a valve in them that hold the oil pressure on the tesioner thus chain slap and after a while it will break because it will get loose i recomend replacing it after 100k 600 dollars is cheaper thana new engine

petrol engine has a timing chain,diesel engine has a belt that needs to be changed every 80000 to 90000 km
