Sort of, when they acquired Abreu last year Sheff was on the DL. This offseason they didn't have a place for both of them to play since they are both RFs and Giambi is the teams DH. When faced with this choice they shipped Sheff to Detroit for some pitching prospects and made Abreu the everyday RF in the Bronx for the next few seasons. It may have backfired on them, but at the time Sheff was coming off an injury plagued season and Abreu had played well in New York over the second half. A lot of teams would have done the same thing in their shoes...
The people below me are both entirely wrong...Sheff was traded to Detroit, it had nothing to do with not renewing his contract since he wasn't a free agent last off-season. Know your facts before you post people!!!

Ina sense, yes. The first guy was partially correct.
What REALLY happened was that the yankees picked up Sheffield's option year (otherwise, had the yankees NOT picked up his option year, he would have been a Free Agent).
Cashman did this on purpose so that he could trade Sheffield (sense he had no room for him). Sheffield's biggest concern was that the yankees extend his contract for 2 years, and the yankees were unwilling to do...so in order to get something for him they picked up his option year and traded him to Detroit for 3 minor pitchers (one of whom needs back surgery and will be out for a year and another needs tommy john surgery.
The Tigers got the best of that deal, as when he got traded The Tigers automatically extended his contract for 3 years.

No. they were both on the team last year. Sheffield left as a free agent.
AJN4644 or whatever at the top here does not know what the hell she (I assume its a she) is talking about . Sheffield was not traded for anythingg. His contract was just not renewed.

no they got abreu last year and this year they didnt renew sheffields contract that would be stupid to trade sheffield for abreu
