Since Pentium D is the dual core precursor to the newer Intel dual/quad core chipsets, it is still a dual core processor. I'd have to say that the Pentium D would work well on a gaming PC, but make sure you use a graphics card that compliments it (at least 256 MB VRAM). I hope that helps.
Good luck!

Pentium D is the successor to the Pentium 4. Its like 2 P4's on one chip. The 800 series has 2mb of cache whereas the 900 series Pentium D has 4mb's of cache. Of course Id go with a Intel Core 2 cpu instead...

Pentium D is better. Hyperthreading leaks a lot of electricity (turns to HEAT) such that many users just turn OFF HT feature. Here is the better Pentium; C2D technology but cheaper than Conroes and Allendales:

It is no longer the Ghz but getting more done per clock cycle and at lower wattage. That is where Core2 Duo excels.

Both of those processor would be a severe bottleneck to an 8800GTX, but Pentium D would be the better of the two. It'd be worth it to just get a new mobo so you can get a C2D or something.

If you are going for whats the best processor for your system? "Pentium D" would be the best. You can check it even from the price, Pentium D would have the higher price, so meaning, the higher it gets the better it performs, rigth.

A 3.26 is fast! your 1.8 Celeron is fine. The 3.0GHz P4 is not that good. these have too much L2 cache at 1Mb and not realy for a nice video card; Ati Technology can help you there. Stalin
