Although a country artist may be a success as a performer they may not be a successful song writer, they may not be a song writer at all.
Songs in country music are often written by staff writers; songwriters directly employed by music publishers. People like;
Harley Allen
Tony Arata
Bob DiPiero
Matraca Berg
While you may not recognize them by name, you will surely know the songs and the names of the artist that recorded them. They are some of the best known song writers in Nashville.
Look here for a list of Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. You'll recognize about one out of eight of the names.
