What can cause this to go out??
i have a 1997 Toyota Camry with 132,000miles

for an import, that is not realy a high milage vehicle, ive got a 90 civic with 236000, with the original rack, but... a few things can cause this to happen, if the unit has a leak (they always will) and if you dont keep the levels up, you can cause the pump to wear out and ther rack and pinion will soon fallow due to poor lubrication. ill have to think about this some and get back to you.

Hard driving,
Not changing the oil at least every 3,000 miles
Not changing the oil filter every other oil change,
Wear and tear from old age
Poor oil quality,
