in this movie the moms kids (Nicole Kidman)
locks the doors everytime she steps out of the room
and cant open a door unless she closes the last one she opened
i know its kinda stupid but i dont understand why she does that
does anybody know?
i thought it was so that the light wont go from one room to another but why would she lock it??

She was a few fries short of a happy meal. i.e she was not wrapped too tight was extremely paranoid. then she started to see changes in the home that sent her around the bend even more. She also used it as a way to control her children because according to her they suffered from a genetic disorder that cause them to have extreme sensitivity to sunlight and it was also her way of making sure the children did not go into a room where they could chance exposure

I think that since the mom and her kids are spirits, the only way the "chi" or spirit can stay in the room and not get "washed" away is by closing the doors and making sure the windows are covered.
She locks doors to keep the doors from being opened by the humans perhaps. It keeps the spirit trapped in the room.

the answers have been too complicated, "spirit stuff". She was locking the doors BEFORE any spirit stuff happened (which was actually the real ppl).
It was simply cuz she didn't want the kids going into a room that had light. They are children and maybe don't realize how dangerous light is to them. She also made sure the curtains were closed before she unlocked a room and took them to the next.

She locked it so the kids would not accidental go in to that room, with out it being prepared for them to enter it.
If, you watch the movie again the others opened the door, and Nicole freaks out on the maid. I think it explains it in the movie in that spot.

She did it so that the kids couldn't go into a room without her. Plus, she was a ghost and locking the doors was to help keep the living out.

Did you miss the part where they are all dead and they are haunting the rooms they are in while the real family lives in the house? The thing is that they do not know that they are the ghosts and they are locking the doors to protect themselves.

So her kids wont open the doors and go into a room with light. She is afraid her kids don't understand the seriousness of their illness.

I haven't seen the movie in awhile, but I think it's just a precaution to keep the doors from accidentally opening and to keep her kids in the room she made sure was dark.

Yes, she locks it because she does not want the light to come in. I assume she locks it so no one accidentally opens it and allows the light to shine in. Great movie and question.

She's trying to keep her children safe. If she locks the door, she hopes nothing can get in to harm them.
