unfortunately people don't realize the depth of this trade. ivory, as exquisite as it is and as expensive as it is. still remains one of the most cruel animal 'trinkets'.... only second to clubbing baby seals. what kills me, pardon the pun, is that people still continue to purchase such goods. either they have no conscious, or they have no clue. both are equally as frightening. stop. stop the fur, stop the ivory, stop the diamonds, stop perpetuating this this disgusting industry by purchasing these products. please.........

I think they want a product that is as natural, occurring in the natural environment, as possible. Not something totally synthetic. This is a starting ground for reasoning with them not to buy it. When you know why they are buying it you can then reason with them and offer a natural, biodegradable substitution that will fulfill they same wants and desires they have but save a few elephants in the process. There are certain types of woods and timbers that are not in short supply and not from the Amazon rain forest that they could use for say a jewelry box. If it is the pleasure in something exotic and "different" and wood is just boring you could descibe the type of wood used and the natural beauty of the tree to peak their interest in a wood product instead. Or it could be made of bone but cattle or pig or farm-raised animals instead of wild elephants. Getting to the heart of why they want to buy it and then talking them out of it using logic is the way to go.

It's not too bad of a thing if it is certified from a stockpile that was colected before the ban on ivory took place.

People buy ivory because it's beautiful. The best thing to do if some one is worried about ivory products is research. If it is legal ivroy, it will be certified.

I agree that there are two main reasons why anyone would buy ivory:

1. They are totally uneducated about the issue and don't know any better.
2. They don't care about the impact of buying ivory and put their own momentary pleasure ahead of anything else.

and possibly ... they think that their little act won't make a difference because they are "only one person".

Stupidity, greed and indifference. These are the same kinds of idiots who buy tiger products for their so-called health benefits, even though tigers are on the verge of extinction.

because people can get away with it. who is going to stop them, we can sign things and agree with people but when it comes to putting our face to a cause then it becomes different, the difference i'm not sure, but that is what i have come to see.
