Correct as the guy above me said.

The Mets gained half a game on the Braves because of the win. If the Braves would have lost they would gain another 1/2. But the Braves won so both halves cancel out each other.

The full-game/half-game thing helps you compare teams who have played different numbers of games at a given point in the season.

Here's an example:

As of today,

The Milwaukee Brewers (47 W, 33 L) have played 81 games.
The Chicago Cubs (39 W, 40 L) have played 80 games.

Count up the difference in the win column (47-39 = 8).

Count up the difference in the loss column (40-33 = 7) (we need a positive number)

Add up the total: (8 + 7 = 15)

Divide the total by two (15/2 = 7.5 games back)

It would take eight Cub wins, combined with eight Brewer losses, for the Brewers to drop out of first place. With the Brewers playing .588 ball, that's not very likely at this point. :)

Due to the way the math works, that means that if two teams are playing each one another, there's always a one-game swing, one way or the other.

If one team plays and the other does not, there would be a half-game swing.

If each team plays a different opponents, the change will be zero or one game.

Life gets more interesting if there are one or more teams tied for the division/wild card lead. You can win games but still not make up any ground, as the GB number is always calculated against the team which is leading.

a win or a loss is 1/2. game in the standings.
So the mets beat the phil today.
Gain one full game. 12/ for the win by the mets and 1/2 for the loss to the phils.
easy
