If it developed that quickly, you can certainly rule out parasites or bacterial problems. It sounds like a reaction to something about the water chemistry, such as pH shock, but since all the other fish are normal it can't be that far off.

Is it possible the fish had the problem before you added it to the tank but for one reason or the other you could have missed it? That would be my first thought in this situation. If that's possible, it does indeed open the door to many different causes including parasites.

For now I would simply leave him in the tank and allow him to adjust and settle in. Even if it's parasites they were tanked and bagged together for some time so separating him now would not help matters.

I'm not sure what a Compressiceps is. But Your tank could've been no good. The water needed to run a bit before adding the fish. o_o

you sure he's not just 'flaring' his gills to establish a territory? adding 10 fish to a tank at once TENDS to cause some space problems. plus compresseps aren'treally the nicest africans there are.
