Study for the written. Study and know it, like a final for a school exam.

Be totally familiar with the controls. Lights, horn, left right turn emergency brake. Emergency flashers. Low / hi beams, all of it.

It sounds strange but I have a friend, he went for his test, the dude could not figure out how to turn on the turn signal, and got a black mark. Then the examiner said, "Put it in reverse." He couldn't and he failed the test, right there. They told him, "Go get more practice."

He had just gone in after being in a car for 3 days as a driver. He had figured "I been riding in cars 10 years."

Bring proof of insurance.

You really need to have a solid month's worth of driving practice, with an experienced driver, before you go to take the test. Most testers, at least in Pennsylvania, will have you go out on the road, and drive in traffic, passing, lane changes, all of it. If you are not smooth, and not hesitant at doing all that live, in traffic, you'll fail. If you nearly cause an accident, or do cause one, you'll fail.

Do not slam on brakes, do smooth stops. Anticipate stuff, make an effort to look around, check mirrors when passing, etc. Know what the signs mean, and do that. Signal for all turns.

Even if you are nervous, do not make jokes. Just follow instructions. And try above all to feel, and seem, relaxed, but without being devil may care cavalier about it.

Fasten your seatbelt. Ask your instructor to fasten theirs, if they do not do so.

Through the whole thing, They will mark points on a clipboard next to you, and will not tell you if you are failing, unless you do so bad you fail mid-stream, or until you are back.

If you do fail, you can take it again in a few weeks.

Good luck.

Just remember this....it is only a driving test, anf if you are not successful (which hopefully you will be) you can just take it again. Even though it is a big event in YOUR life, it is no great shakes in the big scheme of things - ie your not gonna cause a war or anything if you are not successful. So, plan something beyond your test to look forward to, maybe a meal with your boyfriend or something. Focus on this event rather than your test, and then you will find the test will just come and go en route to your meal out! nerves are caused when you see an event and nothing beyond it, and thus all your thoughts are directed towards that 1 event. Trust me - I am driving instructor with a degree in Psychology and this approach works. Enjoy your meal out - and don't drink and drive home from the restaurant...... :-)

Uphill parking? If you have to do that be sure and use the parking brake (the one you pull with your hand).

Both hands on the wheel
No radio
Use turn signals
Don't run a red or yellow light
Seat Belts

You can handle it.

make sure you know how to do everything... 3 point turn, parallel park, backing up in a strait line. that's what i needed to know for mine. if you know how to do then you wont be as nervous because you'll have confidence. I'm pretty sure when you park uphill park you turn the wheel all the way to the right so if the car rolled back it would roll into the curb.
