You can endure anything if you have something to look forward to. Read the book Man's Search For Meaning by Viktor Frankl. It chronicles his experiences as a concentration camp inmate and describes his psycho-therapeutic method of finding a reason to live.
It is on the list of "the ten most influential books in America."

When a person has a purpose to live through a terrible time they can some how with stand whatever it is to make it through to do their purpose.

Example:

Those who are on their death bed, unconsious, will wait for that special person to show up, before they die and then die pretty quickly after they show up. I guess it is saying good bye... I guess it is very common
