Lets make a definition. Harley Davidson is a US motorcycle firm. HONDA makes four cylinder motorcycles and lots of other things for the home and garden. KAWASAKI makes motorcycles and DUCATI makes one cylinder motorcycles. So what is common among these creations? We usually think of a motorcycle of having 100 HP or more. We think of a motorcycle with a bigger, heavier frame, with more horsepower, with larger tires and wheels, with a weight of at least 100 lbs. and a capability of higher speeds, with 4, 5, or 6 speed transmissions.
I think of a motorbike as not having more than one speed, sometimes belt driven, lower than 50 horsepower, and a limited maximum speed of about 50 MPH. Not hard and fast rules, but some guidelines. European countries often have HP ratings that qualify the 2 wheeled vehicle as a Moped, a Motorbike, or a Motorcycle.
Can you expand or improve on these qualifications?

A Motorcycle has wire spokes on the wheels and a Motorbike has 3 to 6 wider/thicker spokes on the wheels.

Yes I know, some Cruisers do come out with solid wheels. So bite me.

basically a motorcycle is a bike that goes "between your legs" when riding (you straddle it like a horse, & it may actually have some real power!) A scooter is generally something you'd "sit on" like a chair, (e.g: Vespa/Peugeot 50cc or 125cc etc.) and a moped is basically a bicycle with a very small engine attached to it. If you're going to be riding on the road in traffic, get a motorcycle.. that way you'll learn the skills needed to survive & have the proper machinery to get you out of bad situations that other road users (i.e cars & other 4-wheel wankers) put you in.. & i guarantee that it'll happen sooner or later.. speak to a motorcycle shop to find out what really suits your needs. hope this helps.

It's really just a matter of terminology!

Most British bikers ride a motorbike ( or just a bike) but seldom refer to them as motorcycles unless they are being formal.

I think you will see more motorcycles in the US than motorbikes.
