The patch actually reads "LB 33 JS."

It stands for Lew Burdette and Johnny Sain who were traded for each other from the Yankees to the Braves. Burdette went to the Braves and decided to wear the same # that Sain had worn before they were traded for each other.

Both of these players died in the offseason, so it is to honor both of these players.

The Braves will wear a patch this season to honor the memory of both Johnny Sain and Lew Burdette, two of their former hurlers who passed away during the offseason. The patch will read, "LB 33 JS."

Look closely and you'll see a "JS" on there too.

Former Braves pitchers Lew Burdette and Johnny Sain, who coincidentally both wore #33 during their tenures with the team, both died during the past offseason. The patch commemmorates both of them.
