It sounds as if you may have a tendinitis, inflammation of the muscle(s) tendons or arthritis at the base of the thumb.
It is best if you can see a doctor for a proper Dx. and treatment.
Hands are important, do not let this go on too long.
Try to do all of the twisting motion activities with your other hand to avoid aggravating the condition.
Heat or cold may give you some relief. Generally, cold is for swelling and heat is for pain, however, basically it comes down what feels best.
A splint is best determined by your physician, I have seen too many problems come from splints purchased from a drug store without knowledge of how, when and for how long they should be worn.
Good luck

you likely have a tendonitis, an inflammation of the tendon in that area due usually to repetetive motions. Are you left handed? And do you make repetetive motions with that hand all the time? You can help yourself a bit by taking 400 mg of advil every four hours, packing the wrist in ice for twenty minutes every four hours and by wearing a wrist brace when you sleep to immobilize it and allow it to rest.
If these practises do not help, seek out a doctor for further treatment.

I think the RN is correct.

This is really common if you do something you are not used to.
snowmobiling, skiing, music, typing....just lay off of it for about two weeks and if not better seek professional diagnosis.

we used to call it "throttle thumb" at the beginning of snowmobiling season.
