i have dishnetwork for TV and saw a commercial that dishnetwork is now offering internet service. i was curious so i just checked it out.........what a rip-off!!!

you have to pay $199 to LEASE the equipment, not even owning it. they make it sound like it's a good thing because they say that it makes upgrading easier. for $80 a month you only get 1.5 mbps down and 256 kbps up. that's ridiculously expensive for crappy service.

am i missing something here?

They were partnered with someone before to provide satellite internet service. I think that company ended up getting bought out or something.
I own my equipment (something like $700 but had it spread out over a year and half) and pay about $95/mo for like the same service for just internet. The latency is bad and weather screws with the signal, but right now I can't afford $1k/mo for a T1 line which is the only other option in the middle of nowhere. Unless I can get a wireless signal over the trees and someone to connect to, still working on that one. ;-)

Bandwidth for dedicated communication via satellite is not cheap. Our company uses a service to connect to satellites to collect data from remote instruments as well as check on their statuses and the service isn't cheap. Also the cost for using SAT phones is expensive for the same reason. It's much cheaper if they don't have to worry about dataflow both ways (such as when a TV satellite signal is broadcast to a whole region).
