Why you know, you're right! I will now switch to the Republican Party!

Let's get real! IFirst of all, it was first France's war, but when they realized it was unwinnable back in the 1950's and pulled out, we couldn't let it go. Eisenhower first sent military advisers to Vietnam. Kennedy continued it. Johnson started the first huge mobilization. And if anything, it was the Republicans who were more insistent on fighting this fiasco.

Nixon ran for President in 1968 with a "secret plan" to end the war. The plan: Accelerate it tremendously, plus commit the War Crime of bombing a neutral country (Cambodia). He is responsible for Pol Pot and the Killing Fields.

Nixons' "surge' didn't work. He would have liked to keep fighting anyway, but public opinion would not let him. So he deserves NO credit for ending the war. If RFK had lived, he would have ended it a lot sooner and saved a lot of lives. Humphrey would have done better than Nixon.

NO credit to the GOP. NONE!

The democrats seem to have a pattern of conduct of starting things and not getting them done. WWII, Korea and Viet Nam were all started under dummycrats and they have Korea so screwed up that all the republican President could do is get a truce. All the talk about getting things done in congress has proved to be a smoke screen to hide the lack of leadership abilities by Pelosi, Reid, Clinton and Kerry. The four of them prefer to give up instead of get things done.

Fascfiter is correct. As far as talking about the Second Indochina War (Vietnam War) it was President Eisenhower that sent troops into Vietnam, who sent the CIA into the north in 1954 to destabilise the north and violated every aspect of the 1954 Geneva Agreements even before they were signed.

You must remember that it was Truman who sent troops into Vietnam in 1949 along with arms and ammunition, in support of the French in their battle against the Viet Minh to keep their colony -- the First Indochina War.

The first US combat troops ever sent to Vietnam were actually sent in 1944 by Roosevelt, and they were the OSS (the forerunner of the CIA) and they were assisting the Viet Minh to fight against the Japanese during WW-2.

Never said that the Democratic party was perfect.

And Iraq was started by a Republican, and he didn't have the forethought to think of how to end it - so it is going to take someone else to do it.

There are idiots all over. But for Vietnam, there was no war like it before it happened for them to learn from; unlike the Iraq clusterf*ck. . .

You could say that, though the conflict in Vietnam was for political reasons, (democracy vs. communism) so it really isn't a good comparison to the war in Iraq which is about religion of money depending on whom you ask, (I hope no one believes it's about terrorism anymore) Also Vietnam ended very badly so I doubt republicans want to take credit for it.

I know theres not much to be proud of on the republican side now, but lets not dredge up stuff that happened more than 40 yrs ago to make ourselves feel more adequate.

Actually it ended like the Dems are trying to end this conflict by the Democrats that controlled congress they voted to suspend all money to support our troops so Nixon had to pull our guys out.

No. The US sent help to Vietnam under Kennedy/Johnson but they did not start the war. And the war didn't end, either. Nixon just pulled the troops out.

Nixon promised to end it but instead secretly increased the bombing. He did withdraw most of the American troops. Congress defunded the war. Ford vetoed the bill and congress over rode the veto with 2/3 vote. Congress ended the Viet Nam war funding.

Yes, and I can see the exact opposite happening in the near future with a little conflict going on right now.
