I have a mower that when you pull the cord to start it and all sudden when I was mowing and I went into an area of tall grass it started smoking a bit and it shut off. When I went to start it, the chord seemed like it was locked. I couldnt pull it to start it up. SO i found this guy who fixes lawn mowers. I told him I didnt want to put much money into it as I would rather just buy new then. So he said he knew what it was and replaced the top of the mower wich had a new string too. He wanted 25 so I said fine as I wasnt going to pay more than that for no old mower. I went home that day and used it. It started fine then I was mowing and I went over a patch of grass it started smoking a little and died and I went to start it again and it locked up again. I phoned the guy and hes making excuses. I want my money back.

Sounds like there is quite a bit of info missing to this story, no offense.

While I know what it's like to be ripped off by repair centers and such, it's hard to tell if you were in this situation.

$25 seems pretty reasonable for a repair job on an old mower. But, if the original repair didn't work, he should take it back and redo his work for free of charge. And if he finds something else wrong with the mower, you should only have to pay the difference in the repairs.

Of course, if the mower is pretty old, which I'm guessing it is, then it could just be time for a new mower. Maybe he did what he could to fix it, but if the same thing happened at the same location in your yard, you have to wonder about that.

Did you tell him what exactly was going on when you were mowing? How long was your grass? Maybe you worked your mower too much on the patch of grass that was too long to be cut with a regular mower. There are many possibilities. Either way though, I would ask him to look at your mower again, there could be a larger underlying problem. Or just suck it up and buy a new one.

The cord lockup you described sounds like a problem with the part he replaced (and most would have done the same).

Did you mention the thickness and height of the grass when the event happened to him? If not, it's your fault for not giving him all the info. From what you described it sounds like the motor got bogged down and needs looked at.

I'd say you got a pretty fair repair. The cord start was locked, and he replaced the assembly.

This is why I get an old neighbor of mine to mow my lawn! No hassle. If the mower breaks, it's someone else's problem!

You get what you pay for. If you refuse to pay for quality repairs, you wont get quality repairs.
Just go buy a new one and leave the repair guy alone. He did the best he could with what was available and with what you were willing to pay.
