I am just starting bass guitar and I keep seeing these words used to describe how to play a note on my tabs. What is the difference between them and how do you do them?

I've played a 6 string for many years, and I know what tapping is, but what are popping and slapping?

Popping is when you "snap" one of the upper strings with your fingers of R hand by pullig them up and letting them snap back against the frets.

Slapping is when you make a similar sound, but by whacking the lower strings with your thumb.

Taken together, this type of playing is called "slap style", "slap bass" etc.

Popping is when you pinch a string, raise it off the fretboard and let it slam back down onto the fretboard. Slapping is using your right hand (if you are playing right handed, otherwise its your left hand) to literally "slap" the strings against the frets. If you can get some videos of some of the premiere bass players you will see what this is more precisely. They both give a special sound that really can't be achieved any other way that is very "percussive" in nature.
