There's Hogwarts, a mixture of Hog and Warts and
Beauxbatons, a mixture of Beaux (Beautiful) and Batons (Sticks), but what about Durmstrang?

"durmstrang" is even more of a joke than the other two. it's from "sturm und drang", which is a (german) term used to refer to the romantic period of german arts (late 18th/early 19th century, goethe and the like.)

"sturm" is german for storm. "drang" is german for pressure or stress. the music and literature of this period was characterized by high passion and drama. the euro/american stereotype of the german and central european personality originated in the german arts of the sturm und drang period (heavy, anguished, depressing), and this is the stereotype that rowling was playing on when she created durmstrang.

According to the Harry Potter Lexicon, Durmstrang comes from "Strum und Drang." Supposedly it was a phrase that refered to a movement in German literature from the 18th century that tranlates as "Storm and Stress." Makes a bit of sense, just move the St and D on the two words.

By the way, the Lexicon also says that Hogwarts gets it's name not from combining Hog and Warts, but rather from a lily called the Hogwart. While I can't find a plant by this name under this spelling, there is the hogwort plant which Rowling says was the inspiration for the name of the School.

I speak Russian and German and it sounds more German than Russian. It has no direct translation into English. Strang in German means 'rope' whilst Durm has no meaning. It might have been a kind of traditional name (rather than a word) that has come from some German words but I think JK Rowling simply made it up.

I don't know if it is an actual word of a made up word. Durmstrang is in bulgaria (at least, Krum plays for the bulgarian quiditch team).... so maybe it's a bulgarian word?
