I thought we weren't supposed to have monopolies...but even at and t and cingular merged, banks are always merging.....

All mergers of public firms must be approved by the Securities and Exchange Commission. Not all mergers are allowed.

that's because they aren't monopolies. They go through a lengthy process before they can merge to make sure. As long as you still have competitive choices, there isn't a monopoly.

I think you would have to agree that there is plenty of competition left in the phone and bank industries.

Sometimes the government explicitly permits monopolies. Major league baseball is one.
