Well, I'm somewhat offended...
I don't think that I hate it with a flaming passion, or wish it would burn in hell, or anything... I just don't like it. Tried Harry Potter books.. couldn't get into them. Tried a movie... didn't like it either. And I do like the fantasy genre as a whole, just not this particular book series. It's just not for me. Sure, some children may like it, but that doesn't mean that I have to. I don't think I'm wasting my time hating a good book, rather, I think I'm using my time wisely by reading other good books that I actually enjoy. I have respect for those that do like Harry Potter, it's just that I don't like it myself. And I'm sure that there are plenty of others out there who feel the same as I do. So.. why waste *your* time hating those that dislike it?
=)

Well, people have different tastes on books. I like the books a lot (I'm completely obsessed), but people who don't like Harry Potter are not stupid. So they don't find the story interesting, so sue them. The only people that I think are stupid for hating Harry Potter are the crazy religious people who don't read the books and think JKR is promoting Satanic things. Now those are some really stupid people.

EDIT: I'd like to say something to the person above me. Just because someone likes Harry Potter, doesn't mean they don't read other books....even "intellectual" books, as you would probably call them. Athough I do agree about these boards being taken over (but the questions are an easy 2 points for me)

Just because some people don't agree with your preference doesn't mean that they're stupid..

The ideas behind Harry Potter may be against some peoples religions.. theres a reason why some people might not like them.

Some people simply don't like the fantasy genre.

There are many reasons why people may not like Harry Potter.. just because they don't like the Harry Potter series does not mean they need to "get a life" or that they are "stupid" ...

Quite frankly, I think you're pretty ignorant yourself for making those comments!

You may think it is a good book however some people may not so therefore to them it would not be a waste of time because in their opinion they are not wasting their time hating a good book. We all have our own opinions and preferences you may like Harry Potter but others may not you are entitled to your opinion but do not try to go forcing it on to others or try to tell others that their opinions are a waste of time. As for reasons why some people dislike Harry Potter it may have something to do with the supernatural and magical themes some people are not as into books of that topic as you seem to be.

It's too bad you would qualify people who legitimately dislike Harry Potter as "stupid."
Everyone has their preferences, and truth be told, the Harry Potter series is reasonably well-written fantasy, but I found it to be rather sugary and generic.
I think better children's fantasy novels would be The Dark is Rising, and Prince Ombra, but hey - that's just my preference. Not smart, or stupid, just my preference.
I hope that the questioner strikes the use of "stupid" and "get a life" from their everyday lexicon.
Imagine them having to hear a colleague present an idea at a departmental meeting, and the only reply they can make to a bad idea are "stupid" and "get a life?"
On the other hand, there are people who overly criticize the Harry Potter series on grounds it encourages paganism, turning away from Christianity, etc. Those people are entitled to their opinions, too, but it's funny that they should target a particular series, and not fantasy books, movies and games in general.

Maybe you should just accept the fact that people are different. Not all people are going to agree with you.
And what's with "get a life". Are you saying that if we don't abide by your rules and we don't like harry potter, that people dont have lives of their own?
I say, it is good that such a book, like many others, can expand one's mind beyond the reality of which only eyes can see and of which fingers can touch. But for you to become such a hostile person against those of us who choose not to read or agree with you, is only speaking out of ignorance.
So, for you to say that "stupid" people hate harry potter books, is quite irrelevant to your question. There are many stupid people, I am with you on that, but I am against you when you call some people stupid because they don't like such a book as Harry Potter.
There is more to life than getting angry at people who don't see eye to eye with you. This will be everywhere you go. There is not of one place that some or most people will see what you see from this book.
I frankly don't care, I am not a child. I am only a child in the eyes of my mother.
I hope this helps a little in your quest to learn why some or most people don't see eye to eye with you.
Have a good day. Don't be too hard on people who don't agree with you.

Tis a matter of opinion, much like why some people don't like some types of food, or hats. I think it quite rude of you to call them *stupid*. Just because children like a book does not make it good. Maybe we should stop this book war based on the hate or lack there of based souly on books and tasted and unite in becoming a hat wearing world once more. Mines a straw boater.

It's not that I *hate* Harry Potter -- I just don't consider it profound, enlightening, or even enjoyable. It's not literature: it's pulp. I think pretty much along the same lines about Harry Potter movies. They are a CGI-junkie's wet dream, but beneath the pretty surface, they are tedious, predictable, and take themselves too seriously.

Speaking of taking oneself too seriously -- why do you accuse people who are not Harry Potter fans of being "stupid"? It's not like Harry Potter books are particularly INTELLECTUAL -- are they?

As I said, I don't per se "hate" these books. There are, however, some phenomena associated with Harry Potter that do annoy me tremendously. I hate the fact that *grown-ups* are obsessed with them. Whether or not Harry Potter books are good CHILDREN's literature is at least debatable, but as far as grown-ups are concerned, there are much, much better things to read. I hate the fact, also, that this section of Y!Answers has been practically taken over by Harry Potter fans, freezing out discussions of anything or anyone else. Shakespeare, Dickens, Stendhal, Marquez -- ever heard of them?

EDIT to answer Kimi: I appreciate your sane response, Kimi. However, I must disagree with you regarding Harry Potter's fans reading other books. Barring rare exceptions (such as yourself, judging by your elegant English), I think that once people become "converted" to Harry Potter worship, they never, ever read anything else. EVER. Judging at least by the outward appearances of Harry Potter worship, it would be sacrilegious to read anything else. Besides -- although I never thought I'd defend those "crazy religious people" -- somewhere deep in their ramblings they've got a point. Note that the religious opposition was not contemporaneous with the beginning of the Harry Potter phenomenon; and these people generally do not seem to be opposing the many other children's books that feature magic, witchcraft and supernatural creatures. The books are one thing, but the FANS have truly become a religious cult -- complete with fanatics who are a hair's breadth from clamoring for us, who don't like Harry Potter, to be diagnosed, medicated or reeducated in some way.

Say one thing against Harry Potter -- and you immediately get inundated with hack psychoanalysis, embellished with atrocious grammar, more atrocious writing style, and even worse spelling. Perhaps it is through their superiour magical powers that Harry Potter fans feel qualified to render diagnoses of their detractors, covering everything from their mental state to their sexual lives.

Please, asker -- YOU get a life.

People have their own taste in books just as in everything else. I love opera, classical music, new age and old rock. I absolutely hate rap, don't like jazz or blues. How about you? I'm not going to criticize you for not liking something I like. I've asked a few of my friends if they are reading the series and they are not. They don't like that type of book. Personally, they don't know what they are missing. It's a much better read to me than their romance novels. To me that is absolute drivel. But there again, people differ in taste. Makes life interesting.

Exactly what language were you writing your question in?

Once you've read actual literature, Harry Potter cannot satisfy you. (By the way, I read the first five books and hated all of them except the first one.) There's no way that you'll be claiming Harry Potter is great once you've reached the age of reason and have read a few hundred books.
