Never seen either, but here's info on the older versions:
West Side Story(1961)
Westside story is the award winning adaptation of the classic romantic tragedy, Romeo and Juliette. The feuding families become two warring New York City gangs- the white Jets led by Riff and the Puerto Rican Sharks, led by Brenardo. Their hatred escalates to a point where neither can coexist with any form of understanding. But when Riff's best friend (and former Jet) Tony and Bernardo's younger sister Maria meet at a dance, no one can do anything to stop their love. Maria and Tony begin meeting in secret, planning to run away. Then the Skarks and Jets plan a rumble under the highway - whoever wins gains control of the streets. Maria sends Tony to stop it, hoping it can end the violence. It goes terribly wrong, and before the lovers know what's happened, tragedy strikes and doesn't stop until the climatic and heartbreaking ending.
The King and I(1956)
Mrs. Anna Leonowens and her son Louis arrive in Bangkok, where she has contracted to teach English to the children of the royal household. She threatens to leave when the house she had been promised is not available, but falls in love with the children. A new slave, a gift of a vassal king, translates "Uncle Tom's Cabin" into a Siamese ballet, expressing her unhappiness at being with the King. She attempts to escape with her lover. Anna and the King fall in love, but her British upbringing inhibits her from joining his harem. She is just about to leave Siam when she hears of the King's imminent death, and returns to help his son, her favorite pupil, rule his people.

Both of these classics are well worth watching. WEST SIDE STORY has more action (an update of ROMEO & JULIET) , but THE KING AND I is a true story of an English school teacher(Anna) hired by the King of Siam(Viet Nam) to teach his numerous offspring. Yul Brenner's performance of the King is iconic. Jodie Foster's ANNA & THE KING was a dramatic telling of the story in which a young Tom Felton (aka Draco Malfoy from the HARRY POTTER movies) played Anna's son.

Both movies are good . If you are into the romeo and juliet type movies. That would be West Side Story in a way. The King and I was definitely a good movie but that depends if you want to see the original with Yul Brenner (spelling) or the newer versions.

I haven't seen West Side Story, but it seems that a lot of people already answered that part of your question, but hardly anyone said anything about "The King and I".
So, since I've seen it, I'll tell you ;)
I think that it is a great movie - it always makes me want to dance! ;0) Yul Brenner is SO awesome & he is such a great actor!!! He makes the perfect king!! And all those kids of his... and all of his wives... so funny! Personally, I don't like Anna's son - he freaks me out a little, but other than him, the movie is great!
I always find myself singing Shall we dance..... after this movie! and the end is sure to bring a tear to your eye! So sad, but yet very sweet.

West Side Story is very good. It is basically, Romeo and Juliet transformed to 1950's New York City.
I have never seen, The King and I.
But, if you don't like musicals, then don't even bother.

I don't like musicals, and both of them are musicals. They're good otherwise. If you like musicals, both are worth watching.
And yes, West Side Story is Romeo and Juliet, but set in New York, with the Sharks and the Jets standing in for the Capulets and Montegues.

Lol. No, honestly I hate West Side Story. Personally, I don't like dancing and singing movies. If you do this would be a good movie for you.
