Corn snakes are a really good first time pet for anyone of any age. They come in so many colors. i couldnt even tell you them all. even one color called a (candy cane corn).
these snakes are very nice and do not bite if at all. though they do eat...you guessed it. Mice. i use frozen mice for mine. they love it. and the mouse is dead so you don't have to watch it die.(put the mouse in warm water for 15 min so its not frozen before feeding) .. its better for the snake as well and you only feed them each week up to 10 days apart. on Age.after feeding leave him/her alone for 48 hours. after that your welcome to hold your snake.
The tank. they only need atlest a 20 gal tank threw out there whole life's. in the tank should have soft bedding, hides, water bowl, a heat lamp or a UTH. (under tank heater) also somthing to watch the temp in the tank. there should be a hot/warm side in the tank. in the 80's for the hot. 70' for warm.
life time for the snake can be 15-20 years sometimes even longer. size is good between 4 to 5 feet. some are seen at 6

I would suggest getting a 2' to 3' captive bred corn snake from a breeder, not a pet store. Baby corns will change color hues as they get older. Also, for a first timer, baby snakes may not have an established history of health and feeding. A breeder can show you records of any particular snake and you can take it from there. If a pet store has records from hatchlinghood, this is a good, as it shows that they purchased from a breeder or that they know what they are doing. I recommend keeping an overall captivity journal from day one. This will help you make suitable decisions in the future regarding your snake's eating, shedding, activity, and so on, should anything peculiar arise. Sounds like the young snakes you saw were of the 'rosy' color variation, which, to me anyway is the most beautiful for corns, but it's hard to tell without seeing. They may also be albinos. And one more thing, corn snakes are a species of rat snake and can reach up to 6'. If you post any further details, I will respond.

The corns you were looking at were snow corns. Most corns are pretty much born with the color they are going to be. The colors will brighten a little, but no drastic changes in general. I know blizzards have a faint pattern that will fade and they become solid white snakes and bloodreds have a pattern that will fade to an almost solid red snake. They change a little each time they shed. Check out cornsnakes.net to get a few pics of many different colors of corns. Even some that are being newly developed and aren't in most books.

alright sorry about the first answer! actually corn snakes very a lot in color. they can breed different colored corns and get new colors. so they have a very wide variety of what you can actually get. the ones you were looking at were probably either albino or breed differently then the corns you were looking at. they are usually various colors and patterns of white yellow orange and red... i used to have an albino corn

here is a site where you can look at some various corns, this is just a small chip off the iceberg though we are going to breed them i printed 4 pages alone of different breeds

Coral snakes are poisonous by the way to the person who answered above.
Corn snakes come in lots of colors, and they will change as they mature. For good info check out

You shouldn't get a corn snake... They are pretty bland and will bore you...
I'm a snake owner, and have been for the past 8 years. I consider myself to be an expert on snakes...
If it is your first snake, I'd suggest going out and getting a Coral Snake. They are just like King Snakes, only better.
Please tell me how you make out. :)
