Go on line and check the laws in your state. In Massachusetts, you fill out a simple form and attach a certified copy of your birth certificate. After approximately 60 days the change becomes official after a legal notice has been posted in the local newspaper and a copy has been given to the court. This is so your creditors or anyone else looking for you has been properly notified. Once you have your certified name change from the court, you'll need to go to the Registry of Motor Vehicles and Social Security Administration to make the change official. Also, if you have a passport the change must be recorded with them although you do not get a new passport with your new name until the old one expires. Also, you have to notify your credit card holders. Good luck. FYI: My cousin's name is George, but we have always called him Frank. He never bothered to change his name legally.

P.S. Cost was around $300 for the legal notice and the certified copy of the birth certificate. I don't believe there was a charge at the court.

HI George- You actually can change your name. Call the secretary of state to check the steps that you need to take. I really think that it's not that expensive at all. The only thing that would be a hassle in the long run would be like your medical records or any other documents that you can't change because they have your official name. In away if you are really serious about changing your name go for it just remember that you need to change all your past document and ID cards. That is the only thing that I can tell you. I just have a good example when a girl gets married she takes her husbands last name so that means that she has to change all of her previous documents. But to be honest she can just keep her maiden name and her married name and that way the process is smoother because remember your birth certificate has your original name. But best luck with the decision you make. Every one wants to change their name for what ever reason we are never happy trust me I have had that idea cross my mind multiple types and have kept my name. There was a good reason why my parents named me that name and it has to mean something to them and that is unique to me at least.

I don't know where you live but here in Australia we can by deedpoll. It costs a couple of hundred dollars I think, but you have to be at least 18. I hope all goes well! Smiles! :)
