Ever since I read Tolkeins work, Harry Potter and The Inheritance series I find it hard to connect with other fantasy books and get interested in them... I tried reading 'The floating island' but to no avail...

Does anyone know any good ones out there that are sort of similar?

Istillcandream: Thank you! The Shannara Series sounds really interesting and no doubt should be similar to LOTR :] I've got to try those! Thanks!!

The Shannara series by Terry Brooks (actually, there are a ton of series by him, they resemble the Lotr books with elves and stuff, but it's completely different)
The Belgariad by David Eddings
The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper
The Circle of Magic by Tamora Pierce
The Pendragon Adventure books by DJ MacHale
The Chronicles of Narnia by CS Lewis (he was a friend of JRR Tolkien)

Susan Cooper's The Dark is Rising series
CS Lewis Narnia
Lloyd Alexander Pyridan series (most famous is The Black Cauldron)
Mary Stewarts Merlin Trilogy

*Very* simple read (about 25 min per book for me), but enjoyable is Holly Blacks Spiderwick series

Watership Down by Richard Adams

and my favorite... but the author seems to be MIA...
Joanne Bertin's The Last DragonLord
and Dragon and Phoenix

You could also try Anne McCaffery (make sure you get Anne, not her son, Todd) The Pern series is the best but her other series are good, too...

"The Blue Sword" is very good, but I can't remember the author... the same lady also wrote "The Outlaws of Sherwood"

I've read all of what you listed above....but none of them even compare to my absolute favorite novel of all times. Unfortunately, it hasn't gotten as much fame as the others, but for me it is definately the best. I have read it so many times, and am a fantasy writer myself, and I still go back all the time and re-read my favorite lines and parts. The book is Transformation by Carol Berg and starts out kind of slow. I stopped reading it when it became somewhat confusing, but a few days later I picked it back up and couldn't put it down for an entire day! Definately my favorite. It is suceeded by two more in the series, but they are, alas, not as good in my opinion. This is great for a standalone novel or the beginning of a series. I strongly urge you to give it a shot, even if it might not be exactly what you're used to reading (it certainly wasn't for me!)

Here is some of what I have read this summer, but then again, I don't know what you like to read.

The Heart Shaped Box by Joe Hill ( he is Stephen Kings son)

Woman in Red By Eileen Goudge

Robyn Carr's trilogy:
Virgin River
Shelter Mountain
Whispering Rock

Go to www.bookreporter.com...great site, they list new books, reviews by readers, and contest. I won three best sellers from them in May.
