The easiest way to call your pet is a name with two syllables.
Means to you and your pet.
A cat or dog doesn't understand its name like you do, it understands the way you say it.
If yo call it names when your angry, and sound angry, it it will hide.
But if you say the same words on a lovely tone, and very sweet, as if it's your lover, it will carress you.
My cats, Lazy and Mellow, might have the wong name.
Lazy is absolutely NOT Lazy.
Mellow, born wild,I fed it myself when she was about 3 weeks old, isn't mellow at al. Nor soft in any way.
I can play with her, but if she catches me, it DOES. And won't let go. Lazy plays all day long, and she's 16 years old now.
But she never uses her nails on me, bites softly.
If you don's know a puppy or kitten? A dog needs a leader, a boss, or it will try to be boss over you. Male dogs will try to fight you, about every month. It's his nature to do so.
A female cat is a solitair living animal, and it will treat you that way, I mean, see you like equal as itself.
2 female cats will hardly accept each other. The 'other' is an intruder. It accepts you, because you feed it.
Male cats fight each other to order rang. The strongest may f**k first, then second strongest, and so on. Wich results in different colors in the nest.
But further on they accept the other male and play together.
Male and female cats do not play together.
But that's if you look at it in 'norma'l nature conditions', a cat has more a personality itself then a dog. A dog has/needs a boss, a cat has staff. They both can give you lots of love, comfort you when your sad. But if your mad at it, a dog will crawl, a cat will hide, but not crawl.
The way you feel/think about your animal, gives a name, your mood will tell you. Dream about it.
Good luck and fun!

Why not get the animal first and see what color it is and what its personality is? When our cat showed up in the yard as one of 3 tiny kittens, all three were named after coloring: Amber, Marble, and Ebony. But after a fairly short while Marble clearly had an mix of characteristics and looked different on one side than the other and was renamed Spots (not Spot) Amber was actually a boy and the woman who took he and Ebony named them Punch and Judy from their rambunctious behavior.

I let each of my animals name themselves (well, not the fish). You will be amazed at how their personalities speak to you in the form of a name. While he's deciding, call him 'hon'.

Take your time with a name, there's no rush. It's fun to sit and look at your new pet, get to know her, etc.
