So one that wont outgrow the tank correct? Well chameleons although they are small require a lot more room then people think. Most geckos are small. Your best bet would be trying to research and find a gecko that is omnivorous like the Golden Gecko, they are fine in a 20 gallon but nothing smaller and only one for a 20gallon. Look into them, they are neat pets. But they are usually not recommended for beginners so look for some alternatives too!

Skinks are omnivorous too, do some research to see if you can find a small one. Unless you are willing to update to a larger tank eventually

There aren't many omnivorous lizards that can stay in a 20 gallon tank. If you can deal with an insect only eating lizard, it opens up more possibilities. Some of the smaller Day gecko species, such as the neon day gecko, would be OK in a 20 gallon turned to be tall as they are arboreal, but they have very specific requirements that must be met. They are considered moderate versus easy to care for. They also need UVB as they are a diurnal species, and most need fairly high humidity. They also eat more fruit than veggies.

Crested geckos can live in a small tank like that, and eat baby food fruit and small crickets. Chameleons need very large cages to climb or they get sick. A bearded dragon needs 75 gallons. A leopard gecko would do fine in a 20 gal but does not eat vegies--only insects. Maybe go to the forums on www.reptilerooms.com and nose around to get some info for awhile before making an informed choice. :)
