In this order. Honda, Kawasaki, Harley, Yamaha, Suzuki. Being an avid rider of all these bikes this is simply my opinion. Of course I also read motorcycle magazines for their opinion as well. Then I call the motorcycle junk yards to find out which is holding up and which ones are not. Even though Harley is loved by almost all it's still basically being sold by name only.

Hi,

choosing the 'best' of anything depends on the individual views of the survey users...It is so difficult to select.

However, it is fairly easy to see WHERE this question has been answered from...If the answer contains the word Harley or Davidson, then it is from America. Americans (even non-riders) are fanatical about these huge beasts.

But are they really the 'best'?

On which quality is this to be made?
Speed? NOT the Harley.
Handling? Definitely NOT the Harley
Economy? Same answer
Purchase price? DEFINITELY NOT the harley!
Comfort? Well, possibly...but so many Harley owners 'customise' their machines to such an extent that they are all but unrideable, They fit extended handlebars that need to be stretched up to reach, fit foot rests so far forward, that the rider is virtually hanging backwards off the handlebars.

I was having a discussion, some 15 or so years ago with a group of Harley riders in Bellingham, WA. They had a mixture of Harley models between them...all were highly chromed, highly polished and LOOKED very smart indeed.
However, they were difficult to ride at speed and the sheer high cost of them would put them well out of my reach.

I duly appreciated their prize possessions and did not attempt to criticise their choice of machine (they were BIG men, some of them!) but then they started on me and my choice of 'ride' at the time. What I was riding wasn't actually my bike, but I was on an BSA A65 lightning, dating from the early 1960's.

They bragged about the 'fact' their Harleys could 'pull a house', then that they were more comfortable (having sat on one of their bikes and ridden it around a mile I was forced to disagree. Then came the challenge...THEIR bikes were more powerful than mine (which was true) but I said that their power was unusable. (especially as no-one had a house that needed pulling)

A few shocked faces later I was challenged to 'prove' it. I said that if we started from where we were (in the western suburbs of Bellingham and rode up the mountain road to the top of Mount Baker, which overlooked us, I would GIVE my bike to whoever had beaten me...Provided they were prepared to do the same.

I had ONE taker, a guy called Steve, who had a sportster. Off we went and, as I expected he was scraping his footboards round every bend (there are quite a few) which severely limited his 'power', he was leaning back, so the wind, as we went up the mountain was buffeting him mercilessly. I passed him (still going up) on my way down about a mile and a half from the summit. My arrival had been monitored by his friends.

He didn't catch me going down, either.

I didn't take his machine from him, despite the urgings of HIS friends, but asked him from then on, not to poke fun at REAL usable motorcycles.

So Harleys remain fixed in the American mentality as the ONLY worthwhile motorcycles, yet when it comes to actual performance and handling they fall WAY behind. So which is the best?

Harleys? Yes, if you are an American.
Ducati? Yes, if you like roadholding and handling, added to extreme performance.
Honda, Yes if you want all round performace, a comparatively low price, a service network unequalled anywhere
Any Other make? Well, Yes, if you are 'in love' with your own choice of machine.

Personally I have owned and enjoyed BMW's and they remain high in MY list, yet they are NOT the fastest, NOT the absolute best handling bike on earth, But they are totally reliable, with a high performance and they are probably the QUIETEST machines on the road...so the 'best' depends on so many things.

Cheers,

BobSpain

Harley Davidson- I've been a passenger on many different kinds of bikes but the Harley was always my favorite- the ride, the sound, and I guess the aura surrounding it.
