It would depend on the condition of the book ( such as any torn pages, hard cover or paperback, creased or worn spine, any spills on it, etc.), the title of the book (how many published in that first printing), the author (was he/she well-known, a first-time author, etc), and that sort of thing. One suggestion I could make would be to either take to a book appraiser, or if the TV program "Antiques Roadshow" ever comes to your area, take it there and hope you can get in to see their appraisers.

I believe it depends on how many were printed in that first printing, and whether the books was wildly successful or not.

obviously it depends on the condition of the book (good, broken, etc) but it really depends more on the book itself; what it is, who wrote it, when it was written (old books in good condition=$$)
