I like Music Man, my kids have done it a couple of times. I highly doubt anyone thinks Iowans are really like that. The play is so old fashioned... I think it's all in good fun. I don't think anyone walks out of the show thinking that Iowans or anyone else for that matter are like that.
I hope you're having a great time doing the show!
Yee Gods!

The play is an affectionate homage to an era long bygone.
I ADORE that show. Hill 2x Shinn 3x and Cowell 5x.
It is about an Iowa that never really existed, just as The Quiet Man was about Ireland.
It is a Period Piece, about a certain place, at a certain time, in our American history.
I embarrass my family every 4th of July (which, BTW, is when the action of the play takes place) by singing, LOUDLY, "76 Trombones" and "Trouble".
You cannot not love this play. It is the essence of Americana.

Kristin Chenoweth is amazing in everything she does and shines brighter than ever in "The Music Man" as Marian. I get a kick out of all the statements about Iowa as well. Some of them are pretty stereotypical but funny none the less.

When I was younger, my music teacher made us watch the movie over and over, because our high school did it when I was 10 or so. I think it's pretty cute, and I do like the way it makes a little bit of a statement on how some towns are small-minded, etc. Have fun in the show!

It's a great musical. I stage managed for that one a couple of years ago and had a great time. It's amazing if it's done right but as long as you have fun and enjoy the experience than the audience will enjoy it too. I love the music and the script is really entertaining. Soak it up and hope you have a great time!!

Unlike so many of today's musicals, this one at least has a story-line and a plot. Sure, it perpetuates a lot of stereotypes - small town provincialism, librarians, teenagers. It's the music that keeps me coming back. No one can write a lyric like Meredith Willson.
