The rules book actually recommends that the line from home plate through second base should be on a east-north-east direction when building a new field. This maximizes the amount of sun that exists for day games without affecting gameplay.

All MLB stadiums are oriented on a NE/SW axis except indoor stadiums.
The idea being of course to keep the setting sun out of the batters eyes

They face North because of the earths magnetic pull. In the Northern Hemisphere the magnetic force helps benefit the pitcher. However, the pull goes to polar opposites during a full moon. So during a full moon the batter has the advantage.

Not all MLB stadiums face north. The sun, the owner, the dugout, the wind, the physical position of the site where the ballpark is built, and other factors are all taken into account in ballpark construction.
