I was just watching Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events and the in-car reel-to-reel found in the banker's car caught my eye. Is there any chance that this might be a real device? And if so, where might I find more info, or one for sale?

Yes, they were available in the 50s and early 60's, before the advent of 4 track and 8 track cassette players. Some cars even had record turntables installed. All of these were after market installations.

The Lemony Snicket film was intended to have a VERY retro look, so a reel to real player would definetly have that feel, same as seeing an old science fiction film showing huge computers with large reels of tape running things.

It was a real device in the fifties, but it was not a real good idea in a moving vehicle as many discovered. The problem was in the tape transport and the range of motions that moving car is subject to. Not even the eight track players in the 1970's worked all that well. I doubt you will find any for sale except at an auction specializing in selling old highfi equipment. I don't remember seeing any when I was growing up and I would suspect that what you saw was a dictophone and not a tape player.
