I need to travel from Rotterdam (Netherlands) to Baumholder (Germany)... Visiting friends at the Army base there, and would like to travel by public transport, but have no idea how to map out the trip or where I'd buy tickets. Can anyone help??

Use an on-line travel planner like:
http://www.ns.nl/servlet/Satellite?cid=1078395483680&pagename=www.ns.nl%2FPage%2FHomepageInternationalEnglish&lang=en&c=Page
Or:
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en?newrequest=yes&protocol=http:&

Or plan the train through one of these sites and buy the tickets through a travel agent, at a station or even just before you travel.
A quick search gave me that the traveltime will be about 7 hours and that you will need to reserve a seat for part of the travel.
That means that it is best to book as soon as you are sure of the date.
