they world wasn't going to end. IT was called Y2k. Basically everything computer ran was going to shut down because people were scared computer couldn't determine that a new century was going to begin. It didn't happen of course, but if it did electricity would be lost. So everything like TVs air conditioning, and lights would not work.

What you are looking for is the Y2K glitch. Computer programmers never took into consideration what would happen when the dating system of computers reached 2000 and the numbers only went up to 1999. Everyone (well not me) got frantic that all very important computer systems would shut down and vital services would be disrupted. People (again, not me) purchased bottled water, canned goods, and generators and prepared for armeggedon. Obviously, that didn't occur.
