It depends. Some Germans do consider Hitler to be a national hero, and some don't. The ones that do keep it quiet because in post-war Germany there are laws (put in place by the allies in WW2) prohibiting open admiration for national socialists. Hitler from 1933 to about 1938 was very popular, and loved by the German people. After the war started - and as the war drug on, some Germans became tired of Hitler. The eventual defeat in war, or course, ruined what he had earlier done for Germany, such as ressurecting the economy, renewing national pride, creating the first social security system in Germany, etc.

One thing that needs to be remembered is that the history of the war was - and is - always written by the victorious side - here, the allies. There are many untold stories and much history about the Third Reich era of Germany that many Americans and the allied nations are unaware of. The statement by some in and out of this thread that Hitler was all about "hate" is not entirely accurate. It sort of worked like this. In Hitler's Germany if you were an ethnic German, you were part of the "in" group. If you were anything other than ethnic German, you were "out." Homosexuals, people that were openly anti-government, criminals, foriegners, etc. were part of the "out group." The reason Jews were subjected to persecution and why millions were subjected to Hitler's program of forced repatriation (i.e., the "Final Solution") was because Jews were seen as foriegners. and in Hitler's Germany, it was "Alles Fur Deutschland" (All for Germany).

This rough treatment of those seen to be outside of the reich of course led to a negative view by other nations. If you were German, though, life was great. I personally feel that if Hitler would have pulled off a success in the war, he would be one of the most beloved leaders in German history.

When I lived in Germany, I found that on the surface, there was naturally much condemnation of Hitler. But, if you ventured just below the surface, there was a fair number of Germans that did admire Hitler. Of course, due to some amazing peer pressure (and the post war laws), the average German could never show open admiration for their former leader.

Hope that helps!

The German's are great and gracious people.
When I toured Germany, the didn't revere Hitler as a hero; and seemed embarresed if the subject was brought up.

I guess I love the way German's say, "Good-bye" to everyone they meet (& don't know) ... and they talk brisk walks after meals too. Anyway's, I couldn't see many traces of Hitler in East or West Germany when I was there ... just great kind people.

Hell no....only the Neo-Nazi's do.

And to be honest, I can't think of any head of a country considering Hitler an Icon, not in these days anymore.

No, and according to a German exchange student in my home, saluting like they did in those days can get you slapped pretty hard by your parents. The government there frowns on anything Hitler and will sanction them.
