J.K. Rowling? Nah. I would say Jane Austen.
Even though many people enjoy Harry Potter, I don't think too many people would say J.K Rowling is the best female author. In my opinion, although I like her books, the people who would say she is the best are either kids, hiding behind other people's opinions, or not at all well-read...

The world's best female writer? J.K. Rowling? You must be joking. Are we talking present day or ever? I'll go with one writer from the past and one from the present. Past-Jane Austen, Present-(we'll stay in the kids books even though there are many great women writers today in all genres) Lois Lowry. See how easy that was? J.K. Rowling is undeniably a great storyteller (although I have to admit I've never finished even the first Harry Potter), but that does not make her a great writer.

Rumer Godden often gets overlooked in a list like this. I love several of the many books that she's written. Some of them are:

The Greengage Summer
An Episode of Sparrows
The Battle of The Villa Fiorita
The Peacock Spring

And some of my fave children's books are written by Godden, like:

The Doll's House
Miss Happiness and Miss Flower
Little Plum

There's a website dedicated to Rumer Godden. Here's a link: http://www.rumergodden.com/

Happy reading to you! :-)

Jane Austen or Charlotte Bronte, in my opinion.

I liked the comment on Rumer Godden above---"In This House of Brede" became a surprise favourite of mine.

Best and best selling are two different things.
Personally I like Margaret Atwood and Ursula K Leguin.
