He was the bright spot in New York during their time of struggle and he never once complained.

He was a true gamer/warrior that new every element of the game and how it was to be played.

He was clutch hitter and a multi time gold glove winner at first and for several years was considered to be the best player in baseball with some very stiff competition in the league at the time.

The best way to describe Donnie Baseball was special.

hmm, average player. I don't think so. He should have won two mvp's if it wasn't for the greatest pitcher alive, Rodger Clemens. He was the most feared player during the mid 80's; look at his stats and one could argue that he was definitely not on steroids. He also has the record for most consecutive homes runs (dale long and ken griffey); eight games and 10 home runs....he actually injured himself in game 9 trying to hit a home run.

He also played on terrible yankee teams until they lost to the Mariners in 95. for the next couple of years, everyone called them Mattingly's team

he is now their bench coach ready to become the new coach once Torre steps down

It is because, when he played, the yankees were terrible, he was the only player that yankee fans could cheer for, also, he only made the playoffs once in his career, and they lost to seattle in the ALDS, fans feel sorry for him because he was such a great player and never even got to the world series. Also, he is a really nice and funny guy.

The one shining star of happiness in an otherwise bleak Yankees era.

For a few years, he played brilliantly.

Then, the back injury.

And then, he was average.

Getting hurt has felled better players than he; it's part of the game. Unfortunately.
