I've heard the argument that the European immigration, that occured in the late 1800s, early 1900s, didn't negatively impact American culture so our current hispanic immigration issue won't either. Here's my question: Do you think this is true? Why or why not?

i think that is FALSE!
those events were two COMPLETELY DIFFERENT types of immigration. when people came in form Ellis Island, they came in LEGALLY! now, the majority of mexicans and latinos come in ILLEGALLY! we cannot have people living in our country without identities, insurance, social security, health care, etc. when illegal immigrants come in from a troubled country, they are just bringing the trouble to us.

this is what a user said in another question:
I understand there is poverty in mexico - however - coming here is NOT fixing their problem - and it only makes it our problem.

If mexicans stayed in their country and worked on their problem - mexico would THRIVE.

I view coming here because it's just too hard there as understandable - however - it's not fair to put an entire nation's problems on another nation.

I stand in line behind illeglas in the emergency room because they don't want to and can't pay for health care. I'm not stupid, you know, I have lived here for 32 years.

I have compassion for them, but I don't think robbing another country of welfare and social services is EVER going to fix mexico's problems. Or anyone else's.

It will perpetually be a problem nation to it'sself and the nations around it.

"good fences make good neighbors" - when someone's kids come play in my backyard cuz theirs is trashed and start to trash mine? Time to build a fence.

The current immigration problem has nothing to do with Latinos. The problem is with illegal immigration and immigrants who come here legally through a special visa( Hi Tech workers) which already led to almost a million Americans being layed off. Remember when computers were the future for workers? Now it is supposedly one of the jobs "Americans don't want to do"

The actual problem with the entire immigration issue is that companies force wages down by hiring illegals. it has been done throughout history and is one of the causes of The Great Depression. Do some research and you will discover the truth.

It isn't that they are coming here. It's the way they are coming here. They should go through the proper channels to come Legally!

The European immigrats came through the proper channels. they weren't allowed off of Ellis Island until processed.

Anytime you have mass immigration it is going to impact the local culture. What I don't like about the current trend is that many of the Mexican immigrants who come here illegally have convinced themselves that they are above our laws, and we "need" them here. If they want to come fine.. just do it Legally.
