I hate high gas prices, but why don't people get mad at 32.00 a gallon coffee as well?

lol..... I bring up this point every day to friends and co-workers.

My take on it though, I see people yelling about 2.87 a gallon gas, but they have no problem paying 1.59 for a quart of bottled water!!!!!

At least gas is a refined product that needs some work to produce.

Water is....... water...... Uh, $1.59 a quart, PEOPLE!?!?!??!?

Because I don't HAVE to buy $32 a gallon coffee! I don't drink the dreck at all, so I don't have to buy it at any price! Gasoline is totally different. Unless I quit working and become a bum, I've got to drive to work, even if I don't drive anywhere else. Also, high gas prices are the most inflationary thing that can happen to any economy. It drives up the price of everything that moves, which is to say everything, because what doesn't move? Plane, train, or truck, everything is transported somehow, and the price has to go up whenever gas does. So it's a double whammy. Gas goes up, and so does everything else. That's what everyone is so mad about! That, and the fact that there are no alternatives. Gas stations all have the same prices now, but it's not at all hard to find a coffee shop with lower prices than Starbucks. So even if you want to drink the dreck, there are plenty of low priced alternatives available to the discriminating buyer. But gas is a monopoly, so it doesn't matter where you buy it. It's the same price all over. That's what all the fuss is about!

If you considered all of the price loading of a gallon of gas, it could be in excess of $32.00 a gallon. Consider the total cost of our involvment in the middle east, health issues caused by toxic air, general environmental damage resulting from fossile fuel/auto production and use, factor in deaths and injuries related to traffic accidents and a host of other factors. Of course we don't pay for all that 'at the pump', but there is a cost and it's considerable. Insurance costs, repair costs and productive time spent in traffic all add up. I'm not trying to put a downer on cars and trucks, but there are a lot of hidden costs to gasoline that aren't attached to coffee. Also, I doubt if anyone gets 'mad' at the price of a cup of joe. I remember when a cup of coffee was a dime, if it was 20 times more I'd still stand in line for it...so would a lot of people.

The only people that like Starbuck's coffee are people that are looking to be hip in some perverted way. Starbuck's really isn't that good.

To answer your question tho...people will pay top dollar for something if you keep the level of it low. 16 ounces of something at a 1.90 sounds a lot cheaper than 15.20 a gallon. It's all marketing. People can and will get fooled all the time by clever marketing.

When is the last time I bought 6 starbucks cups at once? Star bucks is a treat, and it is expensive because it is a specialty shop. You can buy coffee and do it yourself for a fraction of the cost, as for bottled water I do not buy much of that product either. In fact, I pay .08 cents a gallon to the local water company. Gasoline is something that most people cannot go without and not everybody can afford to buy 30 gallons at one sitting. Most people are not buying a gallons worth of coffee or bottled water.

I always wondered that about water. You can get it for free, but many pay a dollar or more for 16 oz. That's about $8 a gallon at the least.

As for the transportation costs, it is some of it, but no one is buying $5 coffee at the gas station.

I only go to Starbucks once a week (Sunday)... and laugh as I spend $4 for a freaking coffee !!

Though I DO laugh at those who claim gas is a "necessity". UNLESS you live in a rural area almost ANY town / city in the USA has a mass transit system. You all ALSO have your FEET !!

I walk to Starbucks each Sunday... 5 blocks. And I ride my bike to work each day... I have a van for my tools, but deliver it to the site each Monday and then bike or take the train.

Because you can go somewhere else for coffee. You have a wide range of choices.

I'm drinking a latte I made myself right now. Didn't cost even close to that.

But also, how much fuel was used to bring those beans to the US, processes them and distribute them to the stores?

Fact: 1/5 off all fuel used in the US is for the production of food.

When they buy, and drink Starbucks, they do it by choice. Why not buy a coffee maker, with a timer, set it for 1/2 an hour before it's time to wake-up, and your own coffee is hot and fresh for you right away?
If they want to get to work in time, using their freedom to drive, as they were raised by society to do, owning your own car being one of the American dreams, you don't get a choice about whether or not to buy gas. You must.
So, if you don't like the prices of Starbuck's coffee, don't buy it. I actually detest their coffee. It's gross to me!

Starbucks is anti american. And their coffee is no better than I get at Waffle House. And for the price I get a full meal.

Because you don't NEED to fill up on Starbucks to get to work!! If put coffee beans in our tanks then I guess we would be complaining about the price of Coffee. I need gas to survive on a daily basis. NOT COFFEE... that's the difference.

And BTW: Water does go through a process when it's bottled... Well for that matter it goes through a cleaning process when you get it out of your tap.. You pay for water that comes out of your faucet.. It's not free. They have to remove all the harmful chemicals and what not that is in the water we drink.. And bottled water goes through an even more extensive process.

But the day We use water, Coffee, Milk or whatever else you want to compare to Gas I Promise I will B*tch up a storm about them to.
