A week ago i have A LOT of live betta fry...now there's only 3!!! they slowly dwindled in numbers...i did everything i could...changed half of the water, did not over feed...but they are still dying...i'm about to give up now but i want to give the remaining 3 a fighting chance. Last night while i was checking the tank, I saw tiny specks of white things on the side of the tank...so small (slightly bigger than the period at the end of this sentence.) that i first thought nothing about it. When i woke up today, i swear that the specks are more now than last night.
What's this? Is this the one killing my fry? is this Saprolegnia fungus? i tried checking the web for Sap but did not find a picture similar to those tiny white specks...
Help Please! should i evacuate the 3 remaining fry to safety?
answer ASAP!

I did use water that's treated for betta fish and I did feed them tiny foods...microworm and infusoria to be exact...but during the first few days they weren't eating (I asked a question in Y!A about this) and figured that they were too small to feed on the microworms...What puzzles me is the fact that they died very quickly...just last saturday i had hundreds of them now there's only three...WHY?!
By the way, I transfered the remaining 3 to a new tank...hopefully they survive...

For one you aren't supposed to do water changes when the fry are so tiny. You shouldn't have your hands anywhere near the tank except to feed them for the first 2 weeks. Then you can gradually add water and siphon some out. Have you ever spawned this pair before? Sometimes genetics don't match up and will cause your fry to die. Also you will lose alot of fry due to them being weak and malformed. Also your temp is a big factor for raising fry. It has to stay at 80F at all times.
As for the white tiny specks it could be coming from left over food or from the dead fry. You need to have a small sponge filter in the tank to help clean it.

As with all egglayers, the fry are very small when just out of the egg and need VERY FINE food, even liquid. Infusoria is the best for them for the first week. I always feed mine Hikari's "First Bites" after the first week. It is so finely ground it looks like brown flour.
You say you did not overfeed, but that is exactly what you must do for at least the first month of their lives. They need to be fed at least three times a day to stay healthy and grow properly.
BTW, did you remove the male once they were free-swimming? You know he will eat them once they leave the bubble nest and go on their own?
As for the white things, even if they are a fungus, a fungus will only attack a fish that is injured or has an open sore or is very stressed from things like poor water quality or fluctuating temperatures. You can scrape them off with a razor blade and siphon them out with the excess food and fish waste.
In the future, if your bettas spawn again, treat the tank with malachite green according to the directions on the bottle to keep any fungus from gaining a foothold.

We had bettas too, we also had those tiny creamy dots on our fish bowls.
We thought they were eggs, but they didn't turn out to be eggs but killers.
It is not just for bettas but also for other guppies and house old fishes.
I think you should go to the proffesionals (fish store not petco)
I suggest you change the tanks as in buy a new tank or rent one while you clean (scrub) the other one.... I don't know anything. sorry.

What are you feeding the fry? Fry need VERY tiny food - on the order of infusoria or microworms. If you're trying to feed them adult food, they are simply starving to death.

I don't know what the white specks are but to be on the safe side I would more them all into seperate containers, plastic cups, whatever you have. I wish you good luck and I hope those three make it through.

This might be Hydra. If it is there used to be a tonic that you could use with your fry. It is called Bausman Tonic. It is a blue salt like crystal. It is safe for fry and scaleless fish.

when i first starting reading was going to say that they could be killing each other but after i got down to the bottom and saw what u wrote, i knew i was wrong. to be safe I would move each one into a seperate container. ive heard about this happening b4. its called Freshwater Ich, White Spot Disease. To stop this: Dry out the tank, gear, ornaments prior to use or treat them with a biocide (like dilute bleach solution) to eliminate parasites.

well, using SINK water is not good for fish WHAT-SO-EVER!
you need the kind of water like from a water bottle.
hopefully that's your problem,
is Betta fry, the same as Betta fish?
if so, you know that they cant be in the same talk as each other-they with kill each other.
i know that you really want to save your last ones, but they may be goners, so b4 you start over and buy all these new ones, talk to the ppl who you u bought them from, and ask them for advise on how you should take care of them.

one has a desease. you have to check which one quick. clean the white stuff on teh side of teh tank. i didnt and my fish got caught and died. keep them in sepereate tanks. see what happens. take them to a vet. (just dont let the cats see them). itll die within a couple of days if you dont take them soon enough. they can die like that of old age too. ick.
