In the beginning, the word 'orgy' was used to describe secret religious rituals that people would have in honor of ancient gods. In particular Dionysus.
Dionysus was the god a drunkenness and hardcore partying, so you can guess what went on in secret meetings like this - a bunch of people got together, drank a lot, and had lots and lots of sex.
That is kind of what it still means, though Greek gods usually don't have anything to do with it any more.
Sometimes someone uses the word 'orgy' to describe something equally over-the-top and self-indulgent, so you could have an 'orgy of spending' which doesn't (necessarily) involve any sex, just lots and LOTS of spending.

an orgy has the same meaning in any meaning. its a group event involving excessiveness. most parties are orgies -- whether its a childrens birthday party and everyone is being excessive about cake and ice cream or people are downing martinis. in a sexual meaning its just the party took off all its clothes and started poking around with each other.
