Before my father died, I always went to see him on Thanksgiving and Christmas . Once he died, I didn't have anything else to do, so I went to the local soup kitchen on Thanksgiving and Christmas . Now I go with my friend to his sister's house . I never learned what single people do to have a decent Thanksgiving and Christmas . It looks like it might not work anymore going to his sister's house for Thanksgiving and Christmas . My question is -- what do single people do to have a decent Thanksgiving and Christmas ? My mother died before my father did, and I REFUSE to go back to to the local soup kitchen for the holidays, so you might as well not offer "Help out at the soup kitchen" .

Start by not feeling so sorry for yourself.
You could be at the soup kitchen becuase you are down and out, not a volunteer.
Everybody suffers in this life. Most of what causes this is our view point and the judgements we make (i.e., this is good, this is bvad, I like, I don't like, etc.) instead of simply realizing that everything simply "is".
Getting rid of or letting go of our desires and attatchments, our ideas that we must havae things our way or else, etc., is a good place to start.

It will lead you to thinking correctly and not judging. It will lead you to acting consciously, in mndful awareness. It will help you loose your sense of being separate from all others and all other things instead of being a part of everything.

Try going on a good Zen retreat. You might learn a lot.
