I got my divorce in 3 months at a cost of roughly $300.00.
I called my county clerk and asked if I could file my own divorce papers. They gave me the name of the distributor that prints forms acceptable to the court. I purchased the forms for $15.00. I paid a filing fee of $210.00. I had to go to various rooms within the county building that houses our courts, just to stand in line and make sure the various copies were properly filed.
Afterward, I had a friend serve my soon to be ex, saving the cost of a process server. Then, we went to the notary so that the proof of service could be notarized nd signed by the friend who served him.
I then had to file the proof of service and wait on a court date. When I went to my Case Management Conference 3 months later, my ex and I requested that the judge grant the divorce as there was no way the marriage could be saved. The judge reviewed our paperwork, made a provision for child support and granted the divorce. We walked out of the courtroom with our final papers in hand and FREEEEEE!
Other than the $235.00, I paid for parking every time I had to go to the court and a small notary fee.
Your state may have different requirements, but you should ask what you can do to hurry the process. Be firm and persistant.
Our state has laws for marital counseling in cases where there are children involved and they have a mandatory waiting period. By filing my own paperwork and firmly telling the judge that I refused to remain married to my ex, that we were living seperately, that we had both found other partners and that no amount of counseling could save the marriage, the requirements were waived at the judges discretion.

If you have no children between you and you both can agree amicably on how to split mutual property you do not need to involve lawyers and all the cost that comes with them!
This is what my ex wife and I did, collectively we drew up a contract that we both agreed to, signed it and had it officiated by witnesses. Once this was done we proceeded with the divorce, it took two months to get to the courtroom and took only 15 minutes once there. The judge asked if we both agreed to the contract, we said yes and bingo bammo it was done!

There is no cheap way out. The easiest way is a no-fault dissolution. As long as there are no arguments over marital assets and if there are children, no argument over custody, it's pretty straight forward.
In Ohio, there is no wait period, so from start to finish....my marriage of 20 years was dissolved in about 2 months. My ex-husband and I had to appear before a referee for a counseling-type thing. We had to fill out paperwork for equitable division of property. And finally, we had to appear before a judge who declared us "over."
Some states require as much as a year-long separation before anything can even begin. You might add additional information to your question, as someone from your state may see your question.
