My Verizon DSL loses connection whenever someone calls or whenever a phone is hung up after talking. What could the problem be?

Yes you need a DSL filter

This sounds as though you are connected into the phone line portion of your house telephone and not the DSL port. Make sure all your telephones have a DSL filter between the phone and the wall jack. Your DSL provider should have given you these filters, there are two types, ones designed for table top phones, and ones designed for wall mounted phones. Check your connection point from your computer by following the telephone line back to the wall jack or telephone it is connected to, if it plugs directly into the wall jack then you need to install the DSL filter and connect the computer line to the DSL portion of the filter.

the phone that you are answering needs to have a two-way splitter and a filter for the phone. If the problem continues call verizon and go through the endless cycle of non-English speaking tech support, good luck with that.
