and those people that keep saying its a ridiculous idea and science fiction, they're either not aware of the on-going researches or they're trying to not believe this fact, coz that makes them feel better....

Einstein once mentioned that intelligence has limits but ignorance has none. Intelligence will seek to improve us, not destroy us as destruction is not intelligent. I'm sure cavemen and witchhunters of the past that would be baffled by our technologies would think we are being destroyed today.
