I need a used car for under 7k, but i dunno which one to get. I'd personally rather have the grand am cause its a 6 cylinder and the system sounds better, but which is more reliable?

They are both manufactured by General Motors and are both good cars. The Grand Am will give you a bit more room - that's the way I'd go.

dear asker. This is a hard choice, since to be honest, both are really bad cars. If you have the extra money, it may be a better Idea to get a Japanese make since they are far more reliable and far more pleasing to drive. they handle better, accelerate better, have better rides, will not break the bank in repairs and fuel costs. But if you must get one of these two, I would go with the Pontiac since it looks better and seems more sophisticated. both makes have about the same reliability since both are most like to be made in the same plant (given both are GM cars). Have you thought about the ford focus or an older Toyota camry? the focus is designed by European designers and is a really good handling car compared to other classes when it came out (not any more) it has good reliability and is cheaper to fix. it is a small car. The Toyota has an excellent v-6! it is the exact v-6 in the Lexus es300 so I promise you will be happy if you can find a Toyota Camry v6 for 7k. The Toyota also has a really good sound system. I would recommend this car the most by far.
good luck!
(note, be careful when buying a car because any car can end up being a disaster no matter the make if it wasn't maintained or has been in a major accident.)

It depends on the engine in the Grand Am. If it's the 3.4 liter, I would stay away. That engine was built in China and reliability has been marginal. If it's the 3.1 liter, I would go with the Grand Am.

The Cavalier will have either a 2.2L or 2.4L 4-cyl. Both have good reliability.

If you plan on modifying the car later, the Cavalier will give you more options. There is actually a fairly large online and aftermarket community for the Cavalier, while few people bother with the 6cyl vehicles. And you can always replace the stereo/speakers if you don't like them.

I am a 35 year auto professional. Do not listen to the young folks on here that don't have enough experience to quote their opinions with any authority. Dang near any new car you buy these days will go two hundred thousand miles with adequate care. Want a good hint as to what is best these days look at the latest J.D.Powers Top Ten quality ratings (yes that's more Fords than any other brand). The two you mentioned are (GM) of similar quality, so get the one you feel best in, and take care of it. happy trails

The Grand Am will run forever, literally. The Cavalier will also run for a long time.

It basically comes down to mileage vs. space. the grand am has more room... the cavalier will get better gas mileage.

Grand AM is better, but be careful because lots of them are owned by teenagers who mess with the audio systems and beat the snot out of the car.

I have had a 2004 Grand Am since 2004 and have not had a single problem with it, sporty, yet comfortable. Love the car drives good, rides good, and as stated not one problem

Preferably i would choose the Gran Am...It's stylish and with a 6cyl. eng., the engine performance is swift....these 2 traits make it an ideal choice....just remember to always have the car inspected by a specialist to be sure your getting what your paying for...
