Cant hear on wifi while playing pokemon pearl?

Hi i just got pokemon pearl today and just finished getting my 1st badge lol ,
but im on wifi with a friend of mine who has diamond and he has a original ds and i have a ds lite, he can hear me talking but I can't hear him talking, can anyone tell me why is that...both my volume and his volume is up and I did the turn on voice chat thing

well he is in my house, first he was in my room then he kept moving farther away? mhh idk its weird and am pissed..

Maybe there is a lot static around and going on with your side. DS lite has poor sound quality compared to the original DS.
