are you sure its the starter?take it to autozone and have them check it for you it could be the solenoid or voltage regulator .if it is the starter the place you want to hit is the starter.

Most people hit themselves in the head when they discover is was just the battery at the end of its life.

I wouldn't smack the starter with a hammer if this is what you mean. This is a good way to damage something else under the hood that wasn't broken.

Have someone do a charging systems diagnostic on it at AutoZone or some other drive up and wait shop. The oil change and tire guys in these drive up and wait shops can do the diagnostic and it's only around $20.00. This will check the alternator, battery, and starter just so you don't buy the wrong thing.

Good Luck!

maybe its loose, crawl under it and shake it, also you can take something like a small hammer or a jack handle and hit it(but not too hard, or you will break it)it could be sticking.
