When I was young, eggs were SMALL, MEDIUM, LARGE,EXTRA LARGE. At some point the size designations were changed to MEDIUM, LARGE, EXTRA LARGE and JUMBO. As if chickens no longer laid small eggs. My question is: Was this a marketing ploy for the purpose of raising the price of eggs?

A marketing ploy, like they've done with toilet paper. The double roll is now what the single roll used to be. @@

I don't know how old you are but egg sizes haven't changed in at least 40 Yr. The sizes are determined by weight. You don't see small in the store because demand is so low. Those are used mainly in processed foods. Except around Easter I can't even get medium eggs which I prefer for deviled eggs.

Jumbo Greater than 2.5 oz. or 71g
Very Large or Extra Large (XL) Greater than 2.25 oz. or 64g
Large (L) Greater than 2 oz. or 57g
Medium (M) Greater than 1.75 oz. or 50g
Small (S) Greater than 1.5 oz. or 43g
Peewee Greater than 1.25 oz. or 35g
