Basically, the decision not to get lights until 1988 was a combination of the people of the neighborhood being against lights plus fans being in favor of the day game only tradition. Wrigley Field is in a dense, residential neighborhood called Lakeview, so, the residents did not want lights because they feared noise and rowdy drunkards. Additionally, many Cubs fans took pride in the fact they were the only team without lights and therefore were against the idea.
However, the tables turned when the MLB commsioner at the time said that the Cubs would not be able to play world series home games at Wrigley Field and have to play at another ball park because all world series games are played at night to increase television ratings. There was controversy and the Cubs owners (The Tribune Company) threatened to leave Wrigley and move to the suburbs. So, they finally reached an agreement and decided to install lights but have a limited night schedule of 18 games max. The first night game was 8/8/88.

The Cubs are limited by the city of Chicago on how many night games they can play. From 1989 until 2005 they were limited to 18 night games at Wrigley Field. That number was increased last year to the 28-32 range.
The lack of lights was an issue in 1984, as they were 1 game away from going to the World Series. If they had done so, there was talk about putting up temporary lighting for the series.

I'm from Chicago and I can tell you the Cubs never had lights until the 80's and there is nothing wrong with them. The reason at this point in time for not playing more night games is its against the law for them to play at night. That is, they can only play maybe 12 out of 62 or so. The neighbors had an ordinance passed some time ago ruling out night baseball. Games on Friday usually start later like 3:00 or so. Plus parking is a nightmare and there is no parking posted everywhere. Your car would get towed in a matter of minutes if you do park. The park and neighborhood were built for day games many years ago. That's just the way it is. The White Sox on the other hand play the majority of their games at night and have had night baseball since the 50's when first introduced.

Day games are traditional at Wrigley. The first night game was Aug. 8, 1988. It was rained out, so the first official night game was Aug. 9, 1988. There are issues with the neighborhood and noise ordinances with the number of night games played at Wrigley.

If you were a REAL baseball fan, you would know it's tradition.
Also it is a city ordinance that they play x amount of day games.
The Cubs were FORCED (my network tv) to put up temporary lights during the 1984 NLCS when playing The San Diego Padres. In 1984 The Cubs had the best home record in the NL, and back then had HFA..but becaue they did no thave lights, HFA was given to SD. Also, back in '84 the NLCS was best of 5 ('85 it became best of 7). The Cubs had a 2-0 game lead over SD, and because they played the last 3 games on the left coast, they ended up losing.
Which was a drag, I was so hoping for a Cubs/Tigers WS.
Tigers still would have won.

It mainly had to due with lack of proper lighting. Also, the area the stadium is located had issues with having games late at night. I think more teams should have day games, to cut down on traffic, keep fans in the seats who can't stay late, attract/allow new fans to attend, etc.
